Richland Fire now carries blood to the scene of emergencies

144units collected at this spring's Blood on Board drive

That was the largest single-day blood drive in the state.

If you've ever wondered what happens before an ambulance reaches the hospital, here's a big change. Richland Fire and Emergency Services' program is officially up and running as of mid-October. Blood rides in a specialized cooler in the on-duty battalion chief's vehicle, and it can be sent to any emergency involving significant blood loss.

Richland is the first fire-based EMS agency in Eastern Washington to bring blood into the field. The American Red Cross supplies the blood, and Chief Randy Aust said the launch marked an important step for local and regional trauma care. The department's second blood drive is Nov. 23.

  • Blood drives planned: twice a year

West Richland's council approves data center rules but rejects a six-month moratorium

Hundreds of people packed West Richland's City Council meeting Tuesday night, and the council approved interim data center rules with all six members voting yes. The rules ban cryptocurrency mining in all zones and remove an existing noise exemption. TriYakNews also reports an ordinance limiting data centers to Mixed-Use Light Industrial land.

“Do not allow Amazon to write the rules.”

A West Richland resident at Tuesday's meeting

Councilmember Kate Moran's motion to have staff draft a six-month moratorium failed on a 3-3 vote. It needed five votes to pass. A moratorium won't come up at the next council meeting, so talks between the city, Amazon and developers continue.
