West Richland's City Council takes up interim data center rules tonight
The Good Day Richland team
If you have thoughts on data centers in West Richland, tonight's the night. The City Council will consider interim regulations that city staff prepared and recommend approving. A city memo says existing codes and state environmental rules address many concerns, but public concern remains.
The interim rules would limit data centers and ban crypto mining
| Topic | What it would do |
|---|---|
| Light Industrial zone | Would prohibit data centers |
| Mixed-Use/Light Industrial | Would allow them under set standards |
| Cryptocurrency mining | Would be prohibited in all zones |
| Noise exemption | Would be removed |

Opponents want more. Tri-Cities Data Center Watch called the proposal a "fake moratorium" and is urging residents to demand a "real" one. The group had already presented the council a petition calling for a temporary moratorium.
- When: 6 p.m. tonight
- Where: West Richland City Hall, 3100 Belmont Boulevard
- Length: interim rules would last up to six months
- Staff recommendation: approve the proposal
