COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks in Tri-Cities saw a surge in families seeking help after SNAP benefits froze on November 1, with Second Harvest's Thanksgiving meal registration filling in hours and Tri-Cities Food Bank in Kennewick serving 174 families in one day. Food bank leaders say the state’s weekly allocation of $2.2 million covers only about 6% of the lost SNAP funds—more community donations are needed to meet growing demand.  Apple Valley News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Columbia Basin College met with admissions representatives from universities including WSU Tri-Cities, UW, Eastern Washington University, and Pacific Lutheran University at the Start Here, Soar There! transfer fair — designed to help them learn about transferring credits and reducing tuition costs. The event attracted hundreds of students, and organizers said CBC will host additional fairs in the future.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Richland educator Van Cummings—who has 40 years of teaching experience—will join the Washington State Board of Education on January 12th, 2026 to represent Eastern Region Seat 2 and succeed Ryan Brault. He will be sworn in on February 11th, 2026 and serve until January 2030.  FOX41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Agriculture reported that its annual survey caught 72,626 Japanese beetles this year—nearly three times more than in 2024—with most found in south central Washington while a drop in treatment consent may have boosted the count. The agency said it will adjust its removal efforts to protect local farms, gardens, parks and forests.  KONA

  • West Richland is considering a ban on aerial fireworks—Kennewick Mayor Gretl Crawford supports the move to align rules across Benton County and lower fire risks and confusion during celebrations.  FOX41 Yakima
  • Traffic in Richland will be disrupted tomorrow, November 6th, as crews work on the South George Washington Way Improvements Project, closing the outside southbound lane on George Washington Way and the west leg of the Aaron Drive/Adams Street intersection while drivers follow detour signs via Goethals Drive and Comstock Street.  KONA
  • Traffic in Richland will be affected as crews work on the South George Washington Way Improvements Project tomorrow, November 6th—drivers should expect the outside southbound lane, the west leg of the Aaron Drive–Adams Street intersection, and the northbound left turn lane to be closed for asphalt patching with a detour available via Goethals Drive and Comstock Street.  KFLD

HEALTH NEWS

  • A listeria outbreak from precooked pasta meals claimed six lives and hospitalized 25 people across several states, including WA—Nate's Fine Foods has recalled over 245,000 items and officials urge residents to check their freezers to prevent illness. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure consumer safety.  The KEY
  • Grace Clinic received a $40,000 grant from Cambia Health Foundation to train mental health interns—who will offer 800 free counseling sessions to over 200 local clients—boosting care across the Tri-Cities.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
