  • Local businesses and organizations in the Tri-Cities are hosting several Halloween events, with a candy and wine pairing at Barnard Griffin Winery beginning today and a trick-or-treat trail at Badger Mountain Trail on Oct. 25. Additional events include a paddle at Howard Amon Park, museum treats in Kennewick, trunk-or-treats at Toyota Center, Pet Smart and Parkview Estates, and haunted grounds at 102 Jadwin Ave. in Richland on Oct. 31 — families can enjoy safe, fun celebrations.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Richland police shared Halloween safety tips after a rare incident last year when a child consumed edible cannabis candy; Commander Damon Jansen urged parents to check candy and help kids cross streets safely — using flashlights or glow sticks to keep them visible. These measures are meant to ensure that families enjoy a safe Halloween night.  NBC Tri-Cities

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An atmospheric river will bring heavy rain and the risk of mudslides to the region as moisture from the central Pacific moves inland. Kennewick Public Works advises drivers to slow down and check that their windshield defroster and wipers are working properly—rain will reduce visibility and end the wildfire season in burned areas.  KEPR

FINANCE NEWS

  • HAPO Community Credit Union said its merger with Community First Bank will shut down banking services from November 7 to 9—online banking, branches, and ATMs will be unavailable. Services will resume on November 10 once all systems reopen.  The KEY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two studies published October 22nd found that gum disease was linked to brain vessel damage and a higher risk of stroke; adults with both gum disease and cavities had an 86% higher chance of stroke, while regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits lowered the risk by up to 81% (health experts say proper oral care may help protect your heart and brain).  FOX41 Yakima
  • AquaStar USA is recalling frozen shrimp sold at WinCo & Safeway because they may have been exposed to cesium-137; no one has gotten sick but customers should return or dispose of the product safely.  The KEY
  • Researchers found that the drug pazopanib, already approved for kidney cancer, extended survival in a small group of children with Ewing sarcoma by cutting off the tumors' blood supply. Ten children remain alive and six continue treatment—more research is needed before changing standard practice.  FOX41 Yakima
  • Researchers reported that cataract surgery was performed in doctors’ offices for 729 procedures using diazepam pills instead of IV sedation, and only one case had a minor complication. More than 99% of patients elected to have a second eye surgery in this specially built surgical suite — the new method showed improved comfort and predictable sedation levels.  FOX41 Yakima
