ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews on both sides of the Columbia River responded today after a man reported being separated from his kayak near Burbank and Finley, and they used drones, jet skis, and boats to search until dark.  KEPR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scouting America introduced a new AI and cybersecurity merit badge on October 14 to help scouts gain digital skills—expanding its program from traditional badges like fishing and fingerprinting. The initiative is designed to better equip young members for modern technology challenges.  FOX41 Yakima
  • The Richland School District Community Based Transition Center launched the Food 4 Thought program this summer so students can learn kitchen skills and deliver meals to families at Chief Joseph middle school. Students plan meals on Mondays, prepare food during the week, and serve 50 to 60 people on Fridays—local partners like Grocery Outlet support the effort and donations for crockpots are welcome.  KEPR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Benton City was honored with the Outstanding Community in Floodplain Management award from the Northwest Regional Floodplain Management Association for quick actions to lower flood risks, boost river habitats and improve water quality — the award shows the city's work to protect residents from flooding dangers.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Benton and Franklin Counties (through their Emergency Management offices) will test sirens on October 16 from 10:00 a.m. to noon along the Columbia and Yakima rivers, with sounds heard in north Richland and nearby areas around the Columbia Generating Station. Each test will be followed by voice announcements (stating that the activation is a test and no action is needed).  NBC Tri-Cities

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Port of Benton sold its Benton City development building at 515 Ninth St. for $300,000 to Issar Properties LLC, a Subway franchisee that took over in January. The building has hosted a Subway restaurant for years and the new owners are now seeking a tenant for the adjacent space.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
