Good morning, Richland. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mortgage rates fell to 6.33% APR last week as the government shutdown began on Wednesday, making key economic data unavailable — this gap is making future rate moves harder to predict for home buyers. The market remains uncertain while buyers weigh their options in a changing economy.  FOX41 Yakima
  • Starting January 2026, Washington stores will charge 12 cents for reusable plastic grocery bags—up from 8 cents for paper bags—under RCW 70A.530 while shoppers using food assistance programs remain exempt, with stores keeping the fee to help cover bag costs.  KFLD
  • A local parent saved money by thrifting holiday gifts as toy prices rose from tariffs—shopping at consignment sales and online, they spent about $100 on items worth $350. This budget-friendly trend shows that secondhand shopping can ease holiday expenses.  FOX41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in the Tri-Cities have been finding dead rats in gardens as sightings increase due to construction, food waste, standing water and the rise in chicken keeping — factors that boost the rodent population. Local experts advise using professional pest control services to safely manage the growing problem.  KFLD
  • Washington Department of Ecology announced it will halt surface water use for Yakima Basin communities starting October 6 due to three years of drought that left reservoirs and streamflows very low — officials warned the measure will affect over 1,500 water rights holders and prompt local water restrictions. The action is planned to protect water for fish and senior rights amidst ongoing drought conditions.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Benton County commissioners appointed Mike Clark as interim sheriff today after years of leadership uncertainty—he brings 22 years of experience and will maintain department operations while a permanent replacement is sought.  Apple Valley News Now
  • The Port of Pasco is set to change how its board of commissioners is elected after a court-approved settlement with a voting rights group — only registered voters in each district can vote in future primaries and general elections, with the new system first used for District 3 in 2026. The November 2025 election for District 2 will continue as planned with Jean Ryckman not seeking re-election and Matt Watkins the only registered candidate.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
  • Hanford's vit plant has received all state permits and a radioactive air emissions license, and state leaders said they now wait on federal officials to process nuclear waste. The plant will begin turning waste into glass by Oct. 15 if the DOE starts operations as planned + officials note the project has taken decades to develop.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers reported on Oct 2nd that adrenaline nasal sprays work as well as or faster than EpiPen injections for severe allergic reactions—studies showed the spray reached the bloodstream in as little as 2.5 minutes, compared to 9 minutes or more for injections, and the FDA approved a product last year for patients over 66 pounds.  FOX41 Yakima

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tri-City Raceway is hosting its 38th annual Fall Classic car race with 135 racers on the nation’s only half mile tri-level track—tickets cost $25 and fans can meet the drivers at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.  KEPR
