ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews in Benton County stopped the slow-moving Christensen Fire near Interstate 82 and East Christensen Road in Kennewick on September 18— the wildfire grew from a quarter acre to several acres in dry grass and shrub while firefighters continue mop-up operations. Apple Valley News Now
- ➤ Firefighters from West Benton Fire Rescue and other agencies put out a two-acre grass fire near Interstate 82—between Prosser and Benton City—on September 17 after a vehicle fire sparked the blaze and threatened several nearby buildings before crews brought it under control by 4:30 p.m. Apple Valley News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Washington State University Tri-Cities in Richland welcomed 120 new students for the fall term today—an 8.1% increase that brought enrollment to 1,609—and saw first-year and graduate numbers rise by 11.1% and 15.5%, outpacing enrollments at other system campuses. Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Communities in the Tri-Cities are creating their first climate adaptation plans because state law now requires cities to include strategies on extreme heat, wildfire smoke, and drought in their planning—Richland and its neighbors will take public comments until October 8 before adopting a final plan this fall. - ➤ On September 27th, volunteers in Washington and Oregon will help fix trails and parks for National Public Lands Day — the Bureau of Land Management will supply tools and safety gear while national park fees are waived. The KEY

- ➤ A new clinical trial found that colon cancer survivors with a PIK3 mutation who took a daily 160 mg dose of aspirin for three years had a 55% lower risk of cancer returning—researchers said the drug’s anti-inflammatory effects may help slow tumor growth. FOX41 Yakima
