  • Today, Kennewick invites residents to honor those lost on 9/11 at the World Trade Center Memorial at Southridge Sports Complex as the local honor guard — from Tri-Cities Professional Firefighters, Kennewick Police, and Benton County Sheriff's Office — will change guard every 30 minutes from 6:30 a.m. until 10:45.  KEPR
  • Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick is asking for food and monetary donations as the shelter faces a critical shortage of supplies for caring for dogs and cats at 1736 East 7th Ave—community members are urged to help keep pet bowls full.  The KEY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Washington will start new tax rules on October 1 that add sales tax on more business services and raise the tax rate for some service firms—this latest change is the largest tax increase in state history. Local small business owners are worried these costs will soon boost prices and slow economic growth.  KONA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Samuel Wang, a Hanford High freshman, was named one of the top 300 innovators in the Thermo-Fisher Junior Innovators Challenge after being nominated by the Mid-Columbia Regional Science and Engineering Fair—he was selected from 2,000 students and will now advance to compete for a top 30 spot.  FOX41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ecology Director Casey Sixkiller criticized the DOE climate report in a letter dated Sept. 2—arguing it understated Washington’s climate impacts and lacked current CO2 data, while critics from the Washington Policy Center said the agency had not met its legal obligation to update emissions data. The dispute comes as Washington faces ongoing challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  KONA
  • The Benton-Franklin Council of Governments and its partners—including Benton County and the cities of Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, and West Richland—announced a climate plan to tackle wildfire smoke, drought, and extreme heat that is open for public review until October 8; public meetings are set for September 23 at Pasco City Hall and September 29 online for community feedback. The plan, which supports future land growth under Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, guides updates to local Comprehensive Plans by 2026.  FOX41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Benton County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on September 16 at 1:00 p.m. at McDaniel Arena to start a multiphase project that will upgrade the grandstands and double the seating from 3,000 to 6,000—with completion expected by July 2026.  FOX41 Yakima
  • FEMA and local officials are updating Benton County's flood maps using new technology after the maps were last revised in the 1980s, focusing on areas like Benton City, West Richland + Finley. The preliminary maps are open for public review and the public comment period plus appeal process will occur in spring 2026, with final maps expected in spring 2027.  NBC Tri-Cities
