  • The WSU Surplus Store auctioned a broken car shaped like a helmet for $8,000 over the weekend—Super-Cougar fan Andy Largent won the four-hour bid despite the car needing towing and repairs.  KFLD

CRIME NEWS

  • On September 5, Richland police responded to two DUI-related crashes—one near Bermuda Road and Majestic Lane where a car swerved onto a sidewalk, struck a light post and wall, then rolled over, and the other near Columbia Park Trail where a suspected drunk driver fled the scene before being arrested, with both suspects now facing DUI charges.  Apple Valley News Now
  • Washington State officials warn homeowners about paving scams in which fraudsters posing as construction workers offer low-price bids, do shoddy work, then vanish, leaving victims with thousands in repair costs—officials advise that consumers only hire contractors registered with L&I and secure three written bids.  The KEY
  • Richland police are investigating a suspected drive-by shooting near Columbia Point Golf Course after arriving on Bradley Boulevard at 1:45 p.m. on September 8—no suspect has been identified, spent casings were found, and witnesses are being interviewed.  Apple Valley News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Benton-Franklin Health District officials have detected a toxic algae bloom at Howard Amon Park on the Columbia River in Richland that shows high levels of cyanotoxins and poses health risks for people and pets. Officials advise visitors to avoid water contact and will monitor toxin levels until conditions become safe.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Richland Police Department honored Lucias, a stray turned bait dog who captured 40 lost dogs over 10 years of service. The 12-year-old dog will retire when he can no longer jump into the animal control truck—a proud milestone for the department.  KONA
  • Senator Patty Murray said the firing of Roger Jarrell— a key official for nuclear cleanup at Hanford— may be the first step in plans to cancel the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant Project. She said the project is set to begin hot commissioning in October and is vital for cleaning up nuclear waste in the area.  Apple Valley News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Monday, September 8, results from the Phase 2 trial showed that the new pill baxdrostat lowered systolic blood pressure by about 5% in patients with chronic kidney disease and high blood pressure while reducing urine albumin by 55% compared to those on placebo - the study of 195 patients also noted higher potassium levels in 41% of those treated. Researchers said the drug works by blocking the hormone aldosterone and may help slow kidney damage, with two Phase 3 trials underway.  FOX41 Yakima
