  • In Pasco, the St. Vincent de Paul food bank now serves over 1,600 families every Wednesday—doubling its pre-pandemic number, as staff say the rise in food insecurity in the Tri-Cities drives the need for more support. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Costco opened its new location Friday at 3125 Queensgate Drive in Richland. The 152,000 square foot store is larger than the Kennewick location — it is expected to ease traffic and give more space to members who join for $65 a year.  KEPR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents across Tri-Cities have reported a surge in rat activity from South Richland to South Kennewick and Benton City over the past two years. Pest control expert Mike said warmer weather, construction—displacing rodents from their natural habitats—and garden and pet food sources are driving the increase.  Apple Valley News Now

  • Pasco Mayor Pete Serrano is being considered for the role of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington pending Senate confirmation — if confirmed, his service as mayor will end.  KFLD
  • Washington's new rent control law took effect May 7 and led eight landlords to be fined $2,000 each for increasing rents after the deadline, including Deer Point Meadows Investments (owner of a Kennewick RV Park) which refunded extra charges to tenants. The fines enforce the rule that rent cannot be raised during a tenant's first year.  KONA

  • Residents in Tri-Cities are advised to keep children and pets away from floating algal mats found in the Columbia River this summer — the Benton Franklin Health District has noted a rise in these toxic blooms at local recreation spots and urges rinsing pets after swimming.  The KEY
