  • Columbia Ability Alliance launched a fundraiser on August 7 with a $50,000 goal to support services for people with unique abilities—local companies have pledged to match smaller donations for independent living and community center programs.  KEPR
  • Today, the Port of Kennewick’s 62-foot lighthouse along the Columbia River celebrates National Lighthouse Day to honor the 1789 congressional approval for lighthouses while the port marks its 110th anniversary. Built in 2010, the structure features an 84-step spiral staircase and a solar-powered LED light flashing every four seconds—its plaza hosts public events for locals and visitors.  NBC Tri-Cities

  • Today, Costco opens its long-awaited Richland warehouse at 3125 Queensgate Drive at 8 a.m. for Tri-Cities shoppers, and the 182,644-square-foot store is nearly 30,000 square feet larger than its Kennewick location + it offers a food court, tire service, pharmacy, optical department, hearing aids and a gas station with 32 fueling spots.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

CRIME NEWS

  • Kennewick and Richland police along with the Tri-Cities Regional SWAT team arrested Mark Barnett and Matthew Miller for a July robbery at a Kennewick residence and seized several firearms and drugs during coordinated searches — detectives now ask the public to share any additional information.  The KEY
  • Kennewick Police said on Wednesday that after a verbal argument Emanuel Naranjo-Hernandez left his home armed and shot a man who was walking away, leaving the victim in stable condition—Naranjo-Hernandez is now in custody facing 1st degree assault charges.  The KEY
  • On Wednesday morning at 4:15 a.m., Benton County deputies responded to a crash on E 3rd Ave in east Kennewick where a Honda hit jersey barriers and injured two passengers who were left behind, and after a search using thermal imaging devices they arrested the suspect driver on suspicion of DUI and vehicular assault.  The KEY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richland city council approved an ordinance to charge annual licensing fees and fine businesses for false fire alarms—police responded to nearly 1,500 calls last year with most found false. The new rule takes effect next week to let first responders focus on real emergencies.  FOX41 Yakima

  • Toxic algae in the Columbia River has led the Benton Franklin Health District to issue a warning for Tri-Cities residents. Health officials advise washing hands — and keeping pets away from algae blooms — as a precaution while enjoying summer activities.  KEPR
