  • Columbia Ability Alliance is running its 48-hour Giving Blitz from August 6 to today to raise funds for clients through multiple donation matching opportunities. President Michael Novakovich explained that matching gifts (including a $7,500 sponsor match) could turn one donation into tens of thousands of dollars to support people with developmental or intellectual disabilities, veterans with PTSD and others in need.  NBC Tri-Cities

  • Spirit Halloween is opening its new store at 1717 George Washington Way, the former Office Depot site, tomorrow with hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.—store manager Bridgit Sabri said the shop will offer costumes and creative decorations themed on hits such as Deadpool, Squid Game, and How to Train Your Dragon—and it is expected to draw local Halloween fans.  KONA

  • The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is searching for 42-year-old Jesse James Manroe Flores after video footage showed him stealing packages near the 7000 block of Wernett and deputies later found his tent in a backyard on the 900 block of Court Street— officers recovered items linked to several thefts and note the suspect rode a bike with a distinctive trailer.  The KEY

  • Local organizers at the REACH Museum and Manhattan Project National Historical Park invite the Richland community to honor the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings with two reflective peace events; the museum hosts Messages of Peace on Friday from noon to 3:30 p.m. while Howard Amon Park holds Lights for Peace on Saturday at 8 p.m. featuring music and a candlelit path of luminarias.  FOX41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richland Fire Chief Tom Huntington is retiring after 31 years of service — Deputy Chief Randy Aust will take over on January 1.  FOX41 Yakima
  • The City of Richland said Trowbridge Boulevard at Dallas Road will be closed for three weeks starting August 11 for needed road work. Eastbound and westbound traffic will detour via Gateway Avenue — a lane shift at Ava Way will help drivers until the road reopens in early September.  The KEY
  • Senator Patty Murray visited Tri-Cities and held a press conference at Tri-Cities Community Health where she warned that Medicaid cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill Act could leave about 250,000 people without Apple Health coverage and strain local hospitals and clinics. She toured the Grid Storage Launchpad at PNNL and later joined a citizens committee to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hanford Reach National Monument — stressing that proposed federal budget cuts could risk more than 1,000 jobs and dampen clean energy innovation in the region.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • Washington faces a new opioid threat as dangerous synthetic opioids called Nitazenes—drugs up to forty-three times stronger than fentanyl and detected in wastewater tests—may need multiple doses of Naloxone to reverse overdoses.  KFLD
  • Dangerous drugs called Nitazenes have started to appear in Washington and pose a new risk in the opioid crisis — they are much stronger than fentanyl and may need extra Narcan doses to help someone who overdoses. A report from April detected these drugs in local wastewater tests, indicating their spread in our community.  The KEY
