  • Today marks the third annual 'Who You're Gonna Call' back-to-school drive in Richland, hosted by Columbia Basin Ghostbusters + Yoke's, which collects school supplies for the Early Learning Center + community members are encouraged to donate essential items.  FOX41 Yakima

CRIME NEWS

  • Local police received major help from the Washington State Patrol Aviation Section during the ongoing Water Follies weekend—using a Cessna 206 they spotted an 18-year-old driver hitting 161 mph on I-82 south of Kennewick—and recorded 7 DUI contacts, 100 aggressive drivers, and 293 speeders.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Local police received help from the State Patrol Aviation Section flying a Cessna 206 with infrared and GPS cameras to spot and stop dangerous driving during Water Follies weekend—an 18-year-old driver was pulled over for speeding at 161 mph and no deadly crashes were reported.  FOX41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, showers and thunderstorms will affect Richland as a flash flood watch remains in effect through tonight—July saw the Tri-Cities average highs near 94°F while Yakima recorded highs around 90°F, with the Tri-Cities running hotter overall.  Apple Valley News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug 1, West Richland Police Department and Benton County Fire District Four ran active shooting and critical incident training at Enterprise Middle School, a larger-scale drill than usual that comes after last year’s Wiley Elementary incident + they plan to continue these drills to improve emergency response.  KEPR
  • Three candidates are competing in a primary for a seat on the Kennewick City Council as the contest heats up—voters will soon see new choices for local government.  Apple Valley News Now
  • The city said the westbound lane of the roundabout at Swift Boulevard and Wright Avenue in Richland will be closed from Aug. 4—15 for a traffic safety improvement project and a marked detour will guide drivers around the work.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tri-Cities Animal Shelter closed early August 1 for a deep cleaning after staff learned of a possible parvovirus outbreak affecting dogs — a measure taken to protect all shelter animals — and will reopen today at normal hours.  Apple Valley News Now
