  • Linda and Scott Cantrill are fighting an insurance company that wants to cut down a 200-year-old oak tree since it is blamed for causing house sinking. The family says the tree helps 11-year-old Redd play safely and stay cool — the company claims the oak is damaging the home.  FOX41 Yakima

  • Richland will welcome a new Costco on August 8 at 3125 Queensgate Drive behind Grocery Outlet—doors will open at 8 a.m. and membership sign-up is available daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 2735 Queensgate Drive.  KONA

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 15, Kennewick police pursued and arrested Herbert Girton after he fled a traffic stop near Steptoe Street and W Tucannon Avenue for speeding and not displaying a license plate; he was charged with driving while his license was suspended, operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device, failing to obey a police officer and obstructing a public servant — authorities also issued civil infractions exceeding $1,500 — following a coordinated investigation with Benton County Sheriff’s Office.  FOX41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study led by Virginia Tech found that volunteers trained their pet dogs to detect spotted lanternfly egg masses on crops and vineyards, with success rates of 82% indoors and 61% in outdoor tests. The research shows citizen dog-handler teams can serve as a low-cost tool to help protect local agriculture—offering a promising boost for community farms.  FOX41 Yakima
