Good morning, Richland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Tri-Cities region reached a population milestone with 322,875 residents in 2025, marking an increase of 2,725 people from last year. Richland led the growth with 740 new residents & Kennewick and West Richland added 670 and 150 residents respectively.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Benton Franklin Humane Society will host a birthday party on July 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its shelter —1736 East 7th Avenue in Kennewick— to mark 59 years of pet adoptions.  KONA
  • Tri-Cities officials are reviewing a plan to replace traditional 4th of July fireworks with drone light shows that will display synchronized, eco-friendly designs above our night sky—an option that promises quieter celebrations and cleaner air for people, pets, and wildlife. The proposal could change local holiday traditions if approved for future festivities.  The KEY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire investigators are still determining if fireworks caused a fire that damaged 14 storage units and injured two men who tried to put out the blaze at 179 Reata Road in Richland on July 8 (the injured were taken to hospitals as crews managed hot spots for hours).  FOX41 Yakima

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burgerville plans to open a location in Kennewick after the city approved a site plan at the former Sonic site and listings for a general manager have been spotted. Details remain unconfirmed — the well-known chain offers a menu with locally sourced ingredients and is set to expand its reach in Washington.  The KEY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cleanup crews at the Hanford Site near the Columbia River are wrapping up a multi-year project that removed 300,000 tons of contaminated soil and 20,000 tons of concrete from an area the size of six football fields—this work lowers long-term environmental risks. Central Plateau Cleanup Company led the effort and also demolished a 20-year-old office complex of 16 trailers in the 100K Area to further reduce hazards.  The KEY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory unveiled a new non-contact drug detection device that can spot fentanyl and cocaine in seconds, a major improvement over tests that once took 5 to 30 minutes.
