EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jana Valdez, a social studies teacher at Legacy High School, was chosen for a special Auschwitz Legacy Fellowship from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation and is one of four statewide (and 44 nationally) educators picked for the six-month program. She will take six months of online training and then travel to Poland for a week to study Auschwitz and learn ways to teach about the Holocaust for at least five years.  The KEY

  • Fish officials said the Columbia River’s spring Chinook salmon run exceeded early forecasts with about 152,000 fish coming upriver. The higher count may allow more fishing days — officials advise anglers to handle the fish gently so they can spawn in the fall.  FOX41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers at Tri-Cities Airport have mixed reactions to the new Real ID rule one week after it took effect. Airport Director Buck Taft said that TSA now screens passengers with additional checks but will soon enforce a hard cutoff—travelers must update their documents promptly.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • The Port of Benton is collaborating with the local chapter of the Mid-Columbia Ninety-Nines to update the Richland Airport's 80-foot compass rose that pilots use to calibrate instruments—surveying will begin on May 19 and painting will start on May 23 with about 150 volunteer hours planned.  NBC Tri-Cities

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study found that family doctors were 77% less likely than OB/GYNs to ask about sexual health questions and cited short visit times + personal beliefs as main barriers. In a survey of 402 family doctors and 299 OB/GYNs, older doctors reported more trouble diagnosing female sexual issues + the results point to gaps in training for sexual health care.  FOX41 Yakima
