- ➤ Community First Bank branches will close on May 9 and reopen on May 13 as new STCU locations (following a merger in progress for over three months) that will offer customers more financial service options. KONA
- ➤ Rudy’s Pepperblends makes salsa mix, meat rubs and pepper blends from locally grown peppers—Rudy Peña grows, dries and crafts the signature Tri-City Blend in 2005 after his wife disliked other spices. - ➤ A recent study found Washington schools rank near the bottom in financial education as they placed 45th overall and 43rd in growth with only 33.5% of eighth graders meeting math standards—raising concerns for parents and lawmakers. Rep. Skyler Rude introduced a bill that passed the House on March 5 to require high school students to learn state financial education standards for graduation, but the measure stalled in the Senate. - ➤ Benton County Mosquito Control District is ramping up its efforts to reduce mosquitoes amid rising temperatures by using drones for larvaciding water sites and trucks in hard-to-reach areas. - ➤ WSDOT removed the flag from US 395 Blue Bridge on April 24 during routine maintenance and found that its flagpole needs repair. Crews have ordered specialized hardware and will complete repairs by Memorial Day weekend. Apple Valley News Now
- ➤ Governor Bob Ferguson signed a rent-control bill on May 7 that limits most rent increases to 7 percent plus inflation or 10 percent and caps increases to 5 percent for manufactured homes (the law also covers single-family homes). - ➤ A study published May 7 found that high stress levels quadrupled the risk of serious COPD flare-ups—researchers tracked 99 former smokers over six months and linked stress to changes that may worsen breathing problems.
