Good morning, Richland. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 2nd of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Indivisible Tri-Cities organized a May Day protest at John Dam Plaza yesterday to call for workers’ rights, democracy, and justice. Founder Loren Malone and protester Craig Mills stressed that job losses and threats to science, education, the environment, clean air, and water are hurting the local workforce — a call to action for change.  NBC Tri-Cities

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SharkNinja recalled about 1.8 million Foodi OP300 Series Multi Function Pressure Cookers after reports that lids opened during use and caused burn injuries. The recall affected models sold from January 2019 through March 2025, and the company offered free replacement lids while advising consumers to stop using the cooking function.  FOX41 Yakima

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Wallethub data showed Washington residents increased their household debt in Q2 to Q3 2024 with nearly $3 billion added across the state and an average personal increase of $995—this placed Washington in the top five for rising debt as housing costs and higher interest rates strained finances. Rising mortgage rates and overall economic pressures contributed to the state's ranking behind four more populous states.  KFLD

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After reports from several school districts, including Kennewick, raised concerns that allowing male athletes to compete in girls’ sports violated Title IX, the Department of Education began investigating the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Kennewick School Board President Gabe Galbraith said he expected the move and called for a quick review as the department plans to request documents within one week—OSPI stated it would follow state law until Congress or federal courts mandate changes.  FOX41 Yakima

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washington State Department of Natural Resources confirmed an above-average fire season may start as early as June if moisture does not arrive this May—experts note that a 50-70% normal snowpack and a moderate drought over the Cascades are raising fire risks, and limiting human-caused ignitions can help reduce future fires—public action now is crucial.  FOX41 Yakima

FINANCE NEWS

  • Mortgage rates fell to a three-week low as the average 30-year fixed rate dropped to 6.87% from 7%, which gives home buyers more borrowing power. Analysts say the market now has more inventory and slower price increases, though rates may remain volatile in May—so buyers should consider locking in their rate with a loan officer.  FOX41 Yakima

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Bob Ferguson ordered flags to be lowered to half staff today at state facilities to honor three fallen firefighters including Alvin D. Vaughn, Dean G. Warren, and Lieutenant Leslee Denise Smith. They will be nationally remembered at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg — where 140 heroes will be honored.  The KEY
