ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Richland is celebrating Arbor Day today at 1:00 p.m. with a tree planting event at Craighill Park. Students from Lewis and Clark Elementary School will plant three trees (with opening remarks by Parks & Public Facilities Director Chris Waite and a proclamation from Mayor Theresa Richardson) as the city honors its Tree City USA status.  FOX41 Yakima

  • The Queensgate expansion project nears completion as it finishes the last section of Queensgate Drive linking central Richland to south Kennewick. The project includes a 48-acre development called Terraces at Queensgate and aims to ease traffic congestion.  KONA
  • Gov. Bob Ferguson signed two bills sponsored by state Rep. April Connors that lower rules for job training so high school students can more easily get work certifications—changes that remove limits on training hours and professional licensing requirements.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

HEALTH NEWS

  • Patients who need opioid medicine found it harder to get their prescriptions due to tighter rules set to curb the crisis. Doctors said they tried outreach efforts—like working with pharmacies and training providers—to help people with severe pain get care.  FOX41 Yakima
  • A study found that women with anemia in early pregnancy had a 47% higher risk of giving birth to a child with a heart defect—researchers compared nearly 2,800 mothers of affected babies with almost 14,000 mothers of healthy ones. The researchers noted that most anemia cases arise from iron deficiency and recommended further trials to see if iron supplements could lower the risk.  FOX41 Yakima
  • The Washington State Department of Health said 800 measles cases have been reported so far and nearly all involved unvaccinated individuals — officials urged local parents to ensure their children receive the MMR vaccine.  The KEY
