COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kadlec Foundation is hosting its Good Day Kadlec event on March 27 at the HAPO Center — a free breakfast with fundraising opportunities that requires reservations by phone or email. The breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • The Richland Police Department ended a weekend speed enforcement operation where officers ticketed 74 drivers and arrested 3 on roads such as Keene Road and SR-240—aiming to curb speeding and dangerous street racing. Local residents thanked the police and look forward to more patrols to further improve road safety.  KONA

CRIME NEWS

  • Two wrongful death lawsuits over DUI crashes on March 1 have been filed in Benton County Superior Court by Tamaki Law on behalf of the families of Jhoser Sanchez and Antonio Aguirre in Richland — one suit names Matthew Mason for a head-on crash and the other accuses Trooper Sarah Clasen of causing fatal injuries. Mason is set for arraignment today and both cases will go to trial next March — investigators continue gathering evidence as preparations advance.  FOX41 Yakima

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fusion Fest is a new summer music festival coming to Richland that will begin on June 9 and end on June 14 at John Dam Plaza—organizers are still seeking vendors, performers and volunteers as they add more acts.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Finley FFA Food For Thought campaign will run from April 7th to May 30th at River View High School to provide students with nutritious snacks to help them focus in class. The program is funded by a $1,200 (Living to Serve) grant from the National FFA Organization and will set up a food bin before the bell during 5th to 6th periods.  KFLD
  • An exchange program is connecting the Tri-Cities with universities in Japan to study nuclear history and learn about clean energy ideas—students join lectures and swap visits to see lessons from Hanford and Fukushima. The program started in 2023—run by Columbia Basin College, Washington State University Tri-Cities, Higashi Nippon International University, and National Institute of Technology Fukushima College, it continues to build cultural and academic ties.  NBC Tri-Cities
  • Three education bills to expand student opportunities in Washington advanced unanimously today, with two from the Senate led by Senator Boehnke and one from the House by Representative Connors. The bills will remove age limits on tuition waivers—opening college scholarships to GED recipients and easing rules for CTE students.  The KEY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews started a major rehabilitation project on Stevens Drive between Lee and Swift boulevards on March 17 to improve intersections, sidewalks, bike lanes, and ramps. The work will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction through September—commuters are advised to use alternate routes during the upgrades.  Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business
